Please note:

The data on which INSEE usually relies to compile the construction production index could not be processed for both April and May. In order to produce an estimation, INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition (SDES) relied on auxiliary data. The treatments implemented are explained in the methodological note referenced in the “Documentation” section.

All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In May 2020, output bounced back in the manufacturing industry (+22.0%, after −22.3% in April), as well as in the whole industry (+19.6%, after −20.6% in April). Compared to February (the last month before the start of the general lockdown), output fell by 23.4% in manufacturing and 21.2% in the whole industry.

Manufacturing output slumped over the last three months (−25.9%)

Over the last three months, manufacturing output plunged in manufacturing industry (−25.9%), as well as in the whole industry (−23.4%).

Over this period, output slumped in “other manufacturing”(−25.1%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (−50.7%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−27.7%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−27.8%). It decreased more moderately in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−8.4%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−6.8%).

In May 2020, output increased in all industrial activities

In May, output bounced back in “other manufacturing” (+25.8% after −23.1%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+27.4% after −22.7%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+49.9% after −47.7%). It increased in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+9.2% after −12.1%), in connection with the general recovery, and more moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.8% after −7.5%). Output remained dynamic in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (+13.3% after +6.7%) thanks to the end of maintenance operations on all sites.

Compared to February, output plunged sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (−50.0%) and particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi−trailers (−64.4%). It also decreased sharply in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products (−30.6%), in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−29.6%) and in manufacturing of rubber and plastics products (−24.4%). Conversely, in pharmaceuticals (−2.8%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−8.8%), output decreased little compared to the rest of the industry.
