2020- n° 170In April 2020, further fall in services output (−12.6%) Index of services production - April 2020
In April 2020, output in services fell steeply again (−12.6% after −13.0% in March). Compared to February, the output declined by −23.9 %.
With the containment of the population from 17 March to 10 may 2020, companies’ value added tax (VAT) declarations, used for the turnover indices, have been slightly adapted by the Directorate-General for Public Accounting; therefore, the indices of services production published here could be revised a little bit more than usual.
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices).
In April 2020, output in services fell steeply again (−12.6% after −13.0% in March). Compared to February, the output declined by −23.9 %.
In April 2020, the output decreased again in all subsections
In April 2020, output slumped again in accommodation and food service activities (−64.5% after −50.6%) and in household services (−43.1% after −32.9%), due to containment. It decreased less strongly in business support activities (−5.3% after −8.5% in March), both in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−4.5% after −6.6%) and in administrative and business support activities (−6.3% after −11.0%). In those two subsections, engineering activities or activities of head offices and management consultancy resisted more whereas travel agency, tour operator plummeted again. The output also decreased strongly in transportation and storage (−12.2% after −9.8%) notably in air transport. It turned down in information and communication (−4.8% after +0.3%).
Compared to February, output in services tumbled (−23.9%). The strongest declines occured in accommodation and food service activities (−82.5%), in arts, entertainment and recreation (−64.1%) and in other personal services (−57.3%), included some activities particularly touched like hairdressers. The decrease was also marked but much lower in business support activities (−10.8% in specialised, scientific and technical activities and −16.6% in administrative and business support activities) and in transportation and storage (−20.9%). In information and communication (−4.5%), the output decreased slightly compared to the rest of the services.
