2020In March 2020, the turnover fell in the manufacturing industry (−14.6%) Turnover in industry and construction - March 2020
In March 2020, the turnover fell in the manufacturing industry (−14.6% after −0.2%) as in industry as a whole (−13.0% after −0.6%).
Export turnover decreased sharply in March (−10.8% after +2.5%).
With the containment of the population since the 17th of March, companies’ value added tax (VAT) declarations, used for the turnover indexes, have been slightly adapted by the Directorate-General for Public Accounting ; therefore, the indexes of services production published here could be revised a little bit more than usual.
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall evolution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices).
In March 2020, the turnover fell in the manufacturing industry (−14.6% after −0.2%) as in industry as a whole (−13.0% after −0.6%).
Export turnover decreased sharply in March (−10.8% after +2.5%).
In March 2020, the turnover declined in all sectors
The turnover in “other manufacturing” declined sharply (−16.1% after −0.8%) in most subsections, except in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+8.7% after +1.8%). In the manufacture of transport equipment, the turnover fell drastically (−20.0% after +3.5%), especially in automotive industry (−41.3% after −0.3%). It fell sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−16.5% after −2.5%) with a more modest drop in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−1.3% after −7.7%). The turnover decreased less sharply in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−3.7% after −0.7%) and in energy (−5.5% after −2.8%). It slumped in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−24.2% after −0.4%).
