In March 2020, output in services fell steeply (−12.6% after −1.3% in February).
With the containment of the population since 17 March, companies’ value added tax (VAT) declarations, used for the turnover indexes, have been slightly adapted by the Directorate-General for Public Accounting ; therefore, the indexes of services production published here could be revised a little bit more than usual.
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
All data are corrected for seasonal adjustments and working day adjustments (SA-WDA).
SA-WDA models have been reestimated on a sub-period to adjust indices on the recent past, in order to provide improved fit and better robustness (SA-WDA models were until now estimated on the whole period of indices)
In March 2020, output in services fell steeply (−12.6% after −1.3% in February).
In March 2020, the output decreased in all the subsections
In March 2020, output slumped in accommodation and food service activities (−50.3% after −1.4%), directly linked to containment. It decreased strongly in business support activities (−8.1% after −1.3% in February), more in administrative and business support activities (−11.2% after −1.6%) than in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−5.9% after −1.0%). In those two subsections, engineering activities, scientific research or services to building (including cleaning) resisted more. The output also decreased strongly in household services (−32.5% after −0.5%) with the closing, since the middle of March, of museums and cinemas. The output went down in transportation and storage (−8.0% after −3.0%), notably in air transport. It declined slightly in information and communication (−0.2% after −0.7%), which notably includes telecommunications and computer services, two activities less affected by the health crisis.

Services output diminished over the last three months
Over the last three months from January to March, services output decreased sharply compared to the previous three months (−5.0%).
The output plummeted in accommodation and food services activities (−16.7%). It went down sharply in business support activities (−3.0%): be it in specialised, scientific and technical activities (−2.6%) or in administrative and business service activities (−3.5%). It also diminished sharply in household services (−12.1%), in transportation and storage (−6.0%) and in real estate activities (−5.1%). The output in information and communication turned down more moderately (−0.5%).
Output decreased over a year
In services, output of the first quarter of 2020 declined by 3.5% compared to the first quarter of 2019.
It went down sharply in accommodation and food service activities (−15.3%), in transportation and storage (−6.5%), in household services (−10.9%) and in real estate activities (−5.3%). It decreased more moderately in business support (−1.0%) : it diminished in administrative and business service activities (−2.7%), whereas it rose slightly in specialised, scientific and technical activities (+0.2%) By contrast, the output increased sharply in information and communication (+3.1%).

The month-on-month variation rate of the index of services production in February 2020 has been revised downwards by 0.2 points. Initially published at −1.0%, it has been stated at −1.3% after rounding.
