2020- n° 135In May 2020, consumer prices increased by 0.2% year on year Consumer price index - provisional results - May 2020
These provisional results are only preliminary data. Accordingly, they should not be used for contractual revaluations. The indices published here are based on a limited set of price observations and from estimates of some rates of change for fares which are not yet available. The complete results will be published on 12 June 2020.
Moreover, the health crisis due to the Covid-19 impacts the quality of the data for May 2020: price collection on the field has been adjourned since 16 March, some points of sale were closed and a lot of products were no more available for sale, at least at the beginning of the month. The prices of more than four tenth of the consumption are therefore imputed due to the health crisis.
Additional information is available in “For further information”.
Over a year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) should rise by 0.2% in May 2020, after +0.3% in the previous month, according to the provisional estimate made at the end of the month. This drop in inflation should result from an accentuated fall in the prices of energy and manufactured products and a slowdown in food prices. Contrariwise, the prices of services and tobacco should accelerate year on year.
Over one month, consumer prices should be stable, as in the previous month. Food prices should be sharply less dynamic than in the previous month, partly due to a slowdown in fresh food produce prices. Manufactured product prices should barely drop. Contrariwise, the drop in energy prices should be less pronounced than in the previous month. The prices of services and tobacco should rise, after a stability in April.
Year on year, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices should slow down, to +0.2%, after +0.4% in April. Over one month, it should be stable, as in the previous month.

For further information
The CPI is calculated using scanner data, prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets and a centralized collection (online collect, administrative data). The price collection carried out by collectors on the field (about 40% in the CPI) has been suspended since 16 March: for the concerned products, alternative data collections were carried out (price collection online, price collection by phone, scanner data…). Moreover, a lot of products are no more available for sale (restaurants, shows…). These missing prices due to a lack of collection or an impossibility to purchase the products were imputed in compliance with Eurostat guidelines.
