2020- n° 117In March 2020, manufacturing output plummeted (−18.2%) Industrial production index - March 2020
In March 2020, output slumped in the manufacturing industry (−18.2%, after +0.9%), as well as in the whole industry (−16.2%, after +0.8%).
Given the context of the general lockdown since 17 March, response rates for business survey about March 2020 (collected during April) are lower than usual. Therefore, the results presented here might be more revised than usually in the next publication, which will take into account the answers delivered late. Then, the data on which INSEE usually relies to compile the construction production index could not be processed or collected for both February and March. In order to produce an estimation, INSEE and the statistical service of the Ministry of Ecological and Inclusive Transition (SDES) relied on auxiliary data. The treatments implemented are explained in the methodological note referenced in the “Documentation” section.
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.
The treatments implemented for March 2020 are explained in the methodological note referenced in the documentation section.
In March 2020, output slumped in the manufacturing industry (−18.2%, after +0.9%), as well as in the whole industry (−16.2%, after +0.8%).
Over the first quarter 2020, manufacturing output declined (−6.1%)
Over the last quarter, output decreased sharply in manufacturing industry (−6.1%), as well as in the whole industry (−5.6%).
Over this period, output slumped in the manufacture of transport equipment (−14.3%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−14.0%). It also diminished in “other manufacturing”(−5.8%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−5.3%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−2.6%). Output fell moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.7%).
