graphiqueBreakdown of energy
Manufactured goods: slight increase
Manufactured good consumption increased slightly in February (+0.2% after –2.8%), particularly durable good purchases (+1.4%). Spending on textile-clothing declined sharply and the consumption of other manufactured goods increased slightly.
Durables: slight rebound
In February, durable good spending rebounded after a sharp decline in January (+1.4% after –5.0%). In particular, the consumption of transport equipment rebounded, driven by the recovery in new car purchases, despite a drop in demonstration vehicle consumption.
Housing equipment consumption, especially furnitures, fell for the third consecutive month.
Textile-clothing: decreasing again
Spending on textile-clothing fell sharply again in February, for the third consecutive month (–2.7% after –1.4% in January and December). Clothing sales fell sharply and, to a lesser extent, sales of fabrics and shoes. The winter sale period was shortened this year.
Other engineered goods: slight increase
In February, the consumption of "other manufactured goods" increased slightly (+0.2%), driven in particular by higher DIY item sales.

Scope and definition - Consumption expenditure on goods is compliant with the national-accounts definition (NAF Rev. 2). In 2010, they accounted for half of total households’ consumption expenditure. They are divided into three main items:
Food: products of agriculture, forestry and fishing (AZ), food, drinks and tobacco (C1)
Energy: mining products, as well as water, gas, electricity and air conditioning, sanitation and waste management (DE), and refined and coked products (C2).
Engineered goods: computers, electronic, electrical and optical goods (C3), transport equipment (C4), textiles and clothing, products made of leather, wood, paper, metals, plastic, rubber, chemicals, minerals, furniture, hardware, drugs (C5). Within this heading are distinguished “durable” goods which include transport equipment, household durables (furniture, household appliances, etc.) and other durable goods (jewelry, watches, glasses, medical devices, etc.).
