In January 2020, the sales volume in overall trade recovered (+0.9% after −0.6% in December 2019). It bounced back in wholesale trade (+1.4% after −0.4%) and in retail trade (+0.7% after −1.1%) and kept decreasing in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.6% after −0.2%).

In January 2020, the sales volume in overall trade recovered (+0.9% after −0.6% in December 2019). It bounced back in wholesale trade (+1.4% after −0.4%) and in retail trade (+0.7% after −1.1%) and kept decreasing in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.6% after −0.2%).

The sales volume in overall trade was virtually stable over the last three months

Over the last three months (November 2019 to January 2020), the sales volume in overall trade was virtually stable (−0.1%) compared to the previous three months. It decreased in wholesale trade (−0.2%), increased in retail trade (+0.2%) and was virtually stable in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.1%). Among retail trade, it rose in specialised stores (+0.7%) whereas it decreased in retail trade not in stores (−1.7%) and in non-specialised stores (−0.2%).

The sales volume rose by 3.0% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 3.0% over a year. It increased in all sectors: it rose in wholesale trade (+2.5%), in retail trade (+2.9%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+5.6%). Among retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+4.4%) and in retail trade not in stores (+5.4%) whereas it was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (+0.1%).

In January, rebound in wholesale trade

In January 2020, the sales volume in wholesale trade bounced back (+1.4% after −0.4% in December 2019). It recovered sharply for wholesaler on a fee or contract basis (+4.8% after −1.4%) and in other specialised wholesale (+3.3% after −2.7%). It decelerated in agricultural, raw materials and live animals (+2.3% after +6.4%) and kept increasing at the same pace in food, beverages and tobacco (+0.4% after +0.4%). By contrast, it declined in other machinery, equipment and supplies (−0.7% after −0.1%) and stabilized in household goods after a virtual stability in December (+0.1%).

In January, rebound in retail trade

In January 2020, the sales volume in retail trade bounced back (+0.7% after −1.1% in December 2019). It recovered in non-specialised stores (+1.1% after −0.6%) and in specialised stores (+0.6% after −1.8%), and dwindled in retail trade not in stores (−0.5% after +0.6%). Among specialised stores, the sales volume recovered in other household equipment (+1.3% after −1.6%), in information and communication equipment (+3.6% after −4.2%) and in food, beverages and tobacco (+1.3% after −0.3%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should increase in February 2020 (+1.0%). It should grow by 2.8% year on year.

In January, further decrease in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In January 2020, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased again (−0.6% after −0.2% in December 2019). It fell back in motor vehicles (−1.6% after +0.7%), recovered in motor vehicle parts and accessories (+1.5% after −3.5%) and accelerated sharply in sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles. (+7.6% after +0.9%).
