graphiqueTotal consumption of goods
Manufactured goods: strong decline
In January, manufactured good consumption fell sharply (–2.7%), driven by a drop in durable good purchases (–5.1%). In addition, spending on textile-clothing decreased markedly again (–1.2% after –1.3%). The consumption of other manufactured goods rebounded (+0.3% after –0.3%).
Durables: sharp fall
In January, spending on durable goods fell (–5.1%) after three months of increase. The consumption of transport equipment declined strongly (–7.1%), in particular new car purchases. This decline was partly due to the after-effects following the entry into force on January, 1st, of new rules governing the ecological malus, which had already been anticipated in December.
Housing equipment consumption decreased again (–0.9% after –0.4%), especially household appliance and furniture purchases.
Textile-clothing: sharp downturn
Expenditure on textile-clothing decreased again in January (–1.2% after –1.3%) due to a combined drop in the sales of fabrics, clothes and, to a lesser extent, footwear.
Other engineered goods: rebound
In January, the consumption of "other manufactured goods" rebounded (+0.3% after –0.3%), driven in particular by perfume sales.
