It was stable in wholesale trade (after +0.8% in August).

It dwindled in retail trade (−1.5% after +2.9%) and more moderately in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.6% after +1.5%). It was stable in wholesale trade (after +0.8% in August).

The sales volume in overall trade increased over the last three months

Over the third quarter 2019, the sales volume in overall trade rose by 0.7% compared to the second quarter 2019. It grew by 2.2% in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, by 0.4% in wholesale trade and by 0.5% in retail trade – it rose in specialised stores (+0.7%) and in retail trade not in stores (+2.0%) and decreased in non-specialised stores (−0.2%).

The sales volume rose by 3.6% over a year

The sales volume in overall trade grew by 3.6% over a year. It rose in wholesale trade (+3.7%), in retail trade (+2.8%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+4.9%). Among retail trade, it grew in specialised stores (+3.6%), in retail trade not in stores (+8.7%), and slightly in non-specialised stores (+0.2%).

In September, sharp downturn in retail trade

In September 2019, the sales volume in retail trade fell back sharply (−1.5% after +2.9% in August). It decreased in all sectors: it dwindled in non-specialised stores (−2.0% after +3.3%), in specialised stores (−1.2% after +2.6%) and in retail trade not in stores (−1.6% after +3.2%). Among specialised stores, the sales volume fell back sharply in retail sale of other goods (−1.4% after +3.9%), in automotive fuel (−1.9% after +0.8%) and in other household equipment (−1.0% after +1.1%). By contrast, it kept rising in information and communication equipment (+1.2% after +1.6%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should be virtually stable in October (+0.1%). It should grow by 2.7% year on year.

In September, downturn in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In September 2019, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−0.6% after +1.5% in August). It dwindled in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (−4.4% after +10.9%) and decreased slightly in motor vehicles (−0.4%) after a stability in August. By contrast, it was virtually stable in motor vehicle parts and accessories (+0.1% after +3.0%).

In September, stability in wholesale trade

In September 2019, the sales volume in wholesale trade was stable after a rise in August (+0.8%). It kept rising in other specialised wholesale (+1.2% after +0.6%) and in household goods (+0.7% after +1.0%), and recovered in information and communication equipment (+1.0% after −1.6%). By contrast, it fell back for wholesaler on a fee or contract basis (−1.1% after +0.4%) and more strongly in non specialised wholesale (−3.2% after +6.0%).
