In France, in 2017, 234,000 marriages were celebrated, which is 1,000 more than in 2016. 227,000 marriages were contracted by a woman and a man and 7,000 are same-sex couples. The number of marriages remains at a historically low level.
In 2017, in different-sex marriages, women are 36 years old on average and men 38 years old. The mean age at marriage has increased by more than 5 years in twenty years for both women and men.
The wife is younger than her husband in two marriages out of three. Only a quarter united a wife with a younger husband. In 2017, 25,000 marriages are celebrated by spouses who are at least 10 years apart.
The age difference between spouses is on average higher for marriages between men than for marriages between women.
