Please note: in accordance with European directives, the turnover indices in the industry will use 2015 as base year from the publication of the indices of January 2018, due on March 30, 2018.
In December 2017, the turnover recovered in the manufacturing industry (+0.5 % after −0.4%) just as in industry as a whole (+0.6% after −0.3%). Turnover in export was stable.
Sharp increase over the fourth quarter (+2.6%)
The turnover rose sharply over the last three months in the manufacturing industry (+2.6%) as well as in industry as a whole (+2.5%). Within manufacturing, the turnover grew sharply in the “other manufacturing” (+2.4%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+4.6%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+10.5%) and in the machinery and equipment goods (+1.6%). It was stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages.
Strong increase compared to the previous year (+7.1%)
The turnover grew sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year in the manufacturing industry (+6.6%). The growth was even more marked in industry as a whole (+7.4%) due to the strong increase in the mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (+10.8%). Over this period, the turnover rose sharply in every main sectors of the manufacturing industry − “other manufacturing” (+7.1%), the manufacture of transport equipment (+7.0%), the machinery and equipment sector (+6.6%), the manufacture of food products and beverages (+3.3%) and the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+14.9%).

Increase in December in “other manufacturing” (+0.6%)
The turnover in “other manufacturing” rose slightly in December (+0.6% after +0.1%). It rose again in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipement (+0.8% after +0.7%) as well as in the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (+0.3% after +1.6%). It recovered sharply in the manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (+2.7% after −1.1%) and to a lesser extent in the other manufacturing; repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+0.8% after −1.3%), in the manufacture of rubber and plastic products (+0.3% after −0.1%) and in the manufacture of wood and paper products (+0.3% after −1.1%). Conversely, it fell back sharply in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−2.2% after +3.0%). The turnover decreased again in December in export sales (−0.7% after −2.1%).
Rebound in transport equipment (+1.5%)
In December, the turnover in the manufacture of transport equipment recovered (+1.5% after −2.7%). This rebound was driven by the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+2.8% after −4.4%). The other transport equipment recovered slightly (+0.3% after −1.0%). The turnover also recovered in export sales (+2.3% after −1.2%).
Further increase in coke and refined petroleum products (+2.4%)
The turnover in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products rose again in December (+2.4% after +2.8%).
Rebound in machinery and equipment (+0.9%)
In December, the turnover in machinery and equipment recorvered (+0.9% after −0.6%). It recorvered sharply in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (+2.8% after −1.5 %), and rose in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+0.6%). Conversely, it fell again in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−0.3% after −0.3%). Export sales in machinery and equipment fell again (−0.8% after −0.8%).
Further decrease in food products and beverages (−1.4%)
In December, the turnover continued to decline in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.4% after −0.3%) as well as in export sales (−1.7% after −1.0%).
Revisions
The variation of the turnover index in November 2017 is unchanged in the manufacturing industry (−0.4%) as well as in industry as a whole (−0.3%).
