In September 2017, the sales volume in overall trade rose slightly (+0.3%) after an increase in August (+0.9%). It gathered pace in retail trade (+1.4% after +0.5%). By contrast, it fell back slightly in wholesale trade (−0.2% after +1.0%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% after +1.8%).

The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In September 2017, the sales volume in overall trade rose slightly (+0.3%) after an increase in August (+0.9%). It gathered pace in retail trade (+1.4% after +0.5%). By contrast, it fell back slightly in wholesale trade (−0.2% after +1.0%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% after +1.8%).

The sales volume in overall trade rose by 1.4% over the last three months

Over the last three months (July to September), the sales volume in overall trade went up by 1.4% compared to the previous three months. It rose sharply in wholesale trade (+1.3%) and in retail trade (+1.4%) – it increased sharply in specialised stores (+1.5%), strongly in retail trade not in stores (+6.1%) and more slightly in non-specialised stores (+0.4%). It went up substantially in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.8%).

The sales volume rose by 4.9% over a year

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade grew by 4.9% over a year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose significantly in wholesale trade (+4.6%). It also rose sharply in retail trade (+4.6%) – it grew in specialised stores (+5.3%) and non-specialised stores (+2.4%) as well as in retail trade not in stores (+10.6%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+7.5%).

Acceleration in sales volume of retail trade

In September 2017, the sales volume in retail trade accelerated (+1.4% after +0.5% in August), both in non-specialised stores (+1.8% after +0.2%) and in specialised stores (+1.3% after +0.5%). In particular, the sales volume in other specialised stores (clothing, shoes etc.) went up substantially (+2.1%) after a stability in August. It bounced back in retail of automotive fuel (+1.4% after −1.2%) and grew again in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (+1.1% after +4.2%).

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should decrease in October 2017 (−1.5%). It should grow by 4.1% year-on-year.

Downturn in wholesale trade

In September 2017, the sales volume in whosesale trade fell back slightly (−0.2% after +1.0% in August). It dwindled significantly in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (−3.3% after +6.8%). It went down again in other specialised wholesale (−0.7% after −0.3%) and fell back in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (−0.6% after +0.9%). By contrast, the sales volume grew again in wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.7% after +1.8%) and bounced back in information and communication equipment (+1.8% after −0.8%).

Downturn in sales volume of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In September 2017, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−0.2% after +1.8% in August). This decrease was due to a downturn in sale of motor vehicle (−0.4% after +2.6%), in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (−0.8% after +2.9%) and in sale and repair of motorcycles (−2.9% after +3.0%). Conversely, the sales volume of motor vehicle parts and accessories bounced back (+0,6% after −0.7%).

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in August 2017 is unchanged at +0.9%.
