In October 2017, the turnover in large-scale food retailing fell back sharply (−1.6% after +2.5% in September). The sales slipped back in food products (−0.7% after +1.6%), as well as in non-food products (−4.1% after +3.5%). After two increasing months, sales of automotive fuel declined (−3.0% after +4.5%).

In October, sales decreased slightly in supermarkets (−0.4%) and more markedly in hypermarkets (−2.4%).

In October 2017, the turnover in large-scale food retailing fell back sharply (−1.6% after +2.5% in September). The sales slipped back in food products (−0.7% after +1.6%), as well as in non-food products (−4.1% after +3.5%). After two increasing months, sales of automotive fuel declined (−3.0% after +4.5%).

In October, sales decreased slightly in supermarkets (−0.4%) and more markedly in hypermarkets (−2.4%).

Fall over the last three months

Over the last three months (August to October), the turnover in large-scale food retailing decreased (−0.6%) compared to the previous three months. Over that period, sales went down in food products (−1.1%) as in non-food products (−0.5%). However, they grew in automative fuel (+2.2%). Sales declined in supermarkets (−0.4%) in the same way as in hypermarkets (−0.5%).

Growth of 0.3% over a year

The turnover of the past three months in large-scale food retailing rose by 0.3% compared to the same period a year earlier. Sales grew moderately in non-food products (+0.7%) whereas they decreased clearly in food products (−1.5%). Sales of automotive fuel surged (+7.3%), boosted by the upturn in fuel prices. Year on year, sales increased in supermarkets (+0.6%). They decreased in hypermarkets (−0.3%).

The variation in the turnover of large-scale food-retailing for September 2017 has been revised upwards by 0.2 points to +2.5% instead of +2.3% previously published.
