The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution to the overall variation. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In July 2017, the sales volume in overall trade fell back (−0.4%) after a virtual stability in June. It shrank in wholesale trade (−0.6% after +0.4%) and in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.9% after +0.2%). By contrast, it recovered in retail trade (+0.4% after −0.5%)

The sales volume in overall trade rose by 1.4% over the last three months

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade went up by 1.4% compared to the previous three months. It rose sharply in wholesale trade (+1.9%) and in retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.1%). It went up more moderately in retail trade (+0.4%) – it increased by 3.4% in retail trade not in stores and by 0.4% in non-specialised stores while it flattened out in specialised stores.

The sales volume rose by 4.1% over a year

Over the last three months, the sales volume in overall trade grew by 4.1% year on year. It increased markedly in all sectors. It rose significantly in wholesale trade (+3.5%). It also rose sharply in retail trade (+3.4%) – it grew in specialised stores (+3.2%) and non-specialised stores (+2.8%) as well as in retail trade not in stores (+7.7%). It went up substantially in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+8.1%).

Downturn in wholesale trade

In July 2017, the sales volume in whosesale trade fell back (−0.6% after +0.4% in June). It shrank in wholesale of household goods (−1.8% after +1.3%), in wholesale on a fee or contract basis (−1.7% after +0.8%) and in wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (−1.4% after +0.3%). By contrast, the sales volume recovered in other specialised wholesale (+0.6% after −2.0%) and in wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (+1.7% after −1.1%). It increased again in information and communication equipment (+1.0% after +2.9%).

Decline in sales volume of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In July 2017, the sales volume in trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−0.9% after +0.2% in June). This decline was due to a sharp downturn in sale of motor vehicle (−1.5% after +0.2%), in sale and repair of motorcycles (−4.3% after +2.3%) and in maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (−1.2% after +0.6%). Conversely, the sales volume of motor vehicle parts and accessories rose by 0,8% after a virtual stability in June.

Slight rebound in sales volume of retail trade

In July 2017, the sales volume in retail trade recovered (+0.4% after −0.5% in June), notably in specialised stores (+0.8% after −0.8%). In particular, the sales volume bounced back in retail sale of other goods (+1.5% after −2.1%), in retail sale of information and communication equipment (+3.4% after +1.4%) and in retail sale of automotive fuel (+1.0% after a virtual stability). By contrast, the sales volume fell back sharply in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco (−3.8% after +0.3%). The sales volume in non-specialised stores fell back by 0.5% after a stability in June.

According to the first early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except of motor vehicles and motorcycles should fall in August 2017 (−0.6%). It should grow by 3,0% year on year.

Revisions

The variation in the sales volume of overall trade in June 2017 is unchanged at +0.1% (rounded number) compared to the previous release.
