In January 2017, output decreased sharply again in the manufacturing industry (−1.0% as in the previous month). It diminished more moderately in the whole industry (−0.3% after −1.1%).

Manufacturing output increased by 0.6% over the past three months

Over the past three months, output grew in the manufacturing industry (+0.6% q-o-q), as well as in the overall industry (+0.9% q-o-q).

Output went up in “other manufacturing” (+0.9%). It increased sharply in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+3.1%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.3%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+3.0%). Conversely, it went down in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−1.1%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−0.4%).

Over a year, manufacturing output was virtually stable (+0.1%)

Manufacturing output of the last three months was virtually stable compared to the same months of the previous year (+0.1%, y-o-y). It increased in the whole industry (+0.8%, y-o-y).

Over this period, output soared in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+5.7%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+4.4%). It increased sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.7%). Output jumped in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+7.5%). Conversely, it decreased in “other manufacturing” (−0.8%) and dropped sharply in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−2.0%).

In January, output continued to decline in “other manufacturing” (−0.6% after −1.1%)

Output diminished sharply in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products and other non-metallic mineral products (−2.8%), in chemicals (−2.2%), in other manufacturing, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (−0.9%) and in textiles, clothing and footwear (−1.8%). By contrast, it bounced back in pharmaceuticals (+4.0%).

Output went down sharply in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−2.1% after −0.5%)

Output shrank markedly in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−2.1% after −0.5%), in particular in that of other food products.

Output fell sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.6% after −0.1%)

Output fell back sharply in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (−5.1% after +4.4%) and diminished strongly in the manufacture of electrical equipment (−5.5% after −2.5%). By contrast, it bounced back in that of computer, electronic and optical products (+4.1% after −3.2%).

Output dropped further in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−8.1% after −4.4%)

Output dropped sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−8.1%), following a fall already significant in December (−4.4%).

Output was virtually stable in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.1% after −1.9%)

The sharp fall in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−3.7% after +0.8%) was offset by a strong rebound in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+3.1% after −4.1%).

Output surged in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply, waste management (+4.4% after −2.2%)

Output picked up markedly in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply due to a cold spell in January.
