In January 2016, output increased markedly in the manufacturing industry (+0.8% after 0.0% in December 2015). It bounced back significantly in the industry as a whole (+1.3% after -0.6% in December).
Please note: all the series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
The models used to calculate the SA and WDA series, as well as the weights, have been updated for this publication of the industrial production indices of January 2016.
In January 2016, output increased markedly in the manufacturing industry (+0.8% after 0.0% in December 2015). It bounced back significantly in the industry as a whole (+1.3% after −0.6% in December).
Manufacturing output rose over the last three months (+0.5%)
Output rose over the last three months (+0.5% q-o-q) in the manufacturing industry, whereas it diminished slightly in the whole industry (–0.3%).
Output grew sharply in other manufacturing (+1.9%). Conversely, it fell steeply in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−5.0 %), as well as in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (−2.6%). It weakened in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.9%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (−0.4%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.8%).
Over the year, manufacturing output increased sharply (+2.6%)
Manufacturing output of the last three months increased sharply compared to the same months of the previous year (+2.6%, y-o-y). For that same period, overall industrial output also grew markedly (+1.9% y-o-y).
Manufacturing output soared in other manufacturing (+3.0%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.7%), and in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment (+2.3%). It rose more moderately in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+1.0%). Conversely, it went down in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (−0.7%) and it declined sharply in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (−2.8%)

In January 2016, output surged in the manufacture of transport equipment (+7.5% after −2.6%)
Output picked up sharply in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+11.0% after −2.1%) and in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+3.3% after −3.1%).
Output soared in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+4.9% after −4.4%)
Output recovered markedly in January in electricity, gas, steam and air-conditioning supply (+6.4% after −5.6%), in the aftermath of a drop in December, due to exceptionally mild temperatures in December.
Output increased in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.9% after −1.5%)
Output rallied in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.9%), in particular in the manufacture of other food products.
Output went up in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+2.6% after −4.4%).
Output rebounded in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+2.6% after –4.4% in December).
Output continued to decline in the electrical and electronic equipment; machine equipment (−0.8% after −0.4%)
Output fell sharply again in the manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (−4.4% after −3.3%). Conversely, it expanded in the manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. (+1.6%) and in the manufacture of electrical equipment (+2.1%).
Output decreased slightly in other manufacturing (−0.2% after +1.1%)
Output fell back in pharmaceuticals (–3.2% after +5.6%) and in other manufacturing; repair and installation of machinery and equipment (–1.3% after +2.5%). It declined again in the manufacture of textiles, wearing apparel, leather and related products (−2.2%). Conversely, output recovered in the manufacture of rubber and plastics products, etc. (+2.9%), and rose in the manufacture of basic metals and fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (+0.8%).
