In Q4 2014, the average ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France and overseas departments stood at 10.4%, after 10.3% in Q3 2014. It returned back to its Q2 2013 level. In metropolitan France only, the number of unemployed has risen by 36,000; with 2.9 million people, 10.0% of the active population was unemployed. The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points q-o-q in metropolitan France. Over a year, it increased by 0.4 percentage points.
Increase in unemployment in Q4 2014
In Q4 2014, the average ILO unemployment rate in metropolitan France and overseas departments stood at 10.4%, after 10.3% in Q3 2014. It returned back to its Q2 2013 level. In metropolitan France only, the number of unemployed has risen by 36,000; with 2.9 million people, 10.0% of the active population was unemployed. The unemployment rate increased by 0.1 percentage points q-o-q in metropolitan France. Over a year, it increased by 0.4 percentage points.

Among inactive people, 1.4 million wish to work but they are not considered as unemployed: they are part of the halo around unemployment. The number of people in this unemployment halo rose by 20,000 in Q4 2014, and by 78,000 over the year.

The employment rate and the activity rate increased slightly
The employment rate of the population aged 15-64 years stood at 64.2% in Q4 2014. It increased by 0.1 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, and remained stable year-on-year.
Permanent contracts employment rate increased by 0.2 percentage points in Q4 2014, at 49.1% of the population aged 15-64. Temporary contracts employment rate held steady, at 6.8%.The activity rate of people aged 15-64 stood at 71.4% in Q4 2014, increasing by 0.2 percentage points q-o-q, and by 0.3 percentage points y-o-y.
Underemployment concerns 6.5% of employed people
In Q4 2014, 6.5% of the employed persons were underemployed, increasing by 0.1 percentage points over the quarter. Slack work stood at 0.4% of the employed.

Revision
The ILO unemployment rate of Q3 2014 in metropolitan France remains unchanged, compared to the temporary publication of December 2014. It is revised down by 0.1 percentage points in France and overseas departments.
