In April 2015, the turnover improved in information and communication and in business support activities but declined in transportation Turnover in the wholesale trade and business services - April 2015

In April 2015, the turnover improved in information and communication (+1.4%) and in business support activities (+0.5%). On the contrary, it diminished in transportation and storage (–0.7%). It remained virtually stable in real estate activities (+0.1%) and stable in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In April 2015, the turnover improved in information and communication (+1.4%) and in business support activities (+0.5%). On the contrary, it diminished in transportation and storage (–0.7%). It remained virtually stable in real estate activities (+0.1%) and stable in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

Stability in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In April, the turnover of the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles remained steady, after an increase in March (+0.5%). It went down in other specialised wholesale (–0.8%), in the wholesale of agricultural raw materials and live animals (–1.5%) and of information and communication equipment (–0.8%). Conversely, it increased in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (+0.6%), in the wholesale of food, beverages and tobacco (+0.6%) and of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+0.6%).

The turnover of the wholesale trade improved over the last three months (+0.5%) but declined over the year (–1.4%).

Decrease in transportation and storage

In April, the turnover of transportation and storage declined (–0.7%) after two months of increase. It went down in land transport and transport via pipelines (–1.0%), in warehousing and support activities for transportation (–0.9%) and in postal and courier activities (–2.5%). Conversely, it improved in air transport (+1.7%) and in water transport (+0.7%).

The turnover of transportation and storage held steady over the last three months and improved over the year (+0.9%).

Virtual stability in real estate activities

The turnover of real estate activities remained almost steady in April (+0.1%) after two months of increase. It increased over the last three months (+2.3%) and over the year (+1.7%).

Increase in information and communication

In April, the turnover of the information and communication sector improved (+1.4%) after an almost stability in March (+0.1%). It rebounded sharply in telecommunications (+3.3%) and more moderately in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+1.0%). It also increased in motion picture, video and television programme production (+0.8%). On the contrary, it declined again in programming and broadcasting activities (–1.3%, after –0.6%). It shrunk in information service activities(–0.6%) and, very slightly, in publishing activities (–0.2%).

The turnover of information and communication increased over the three months (+0.7%) as well as over the year (+2.2%).

Third consecutive monthly increase in business support activities

The turnover of business support activities improved again in April (+0.5%, after +0.8% in March and +0.4% in February).

The turnover went up in professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.9%), thanks to a sharp increase in activities of head offices (+4.4%), while the turnover declined markedly in legal and accounting activities (–2.8%) and in advertising and market research (–2.1%). The turnover in administrative and support service activities remained steady: the increase in office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+0.6%) offset the decline in services to buildings and landscape activities (–0.7%) and in travel agency, tour operator (–0.5%).

The turnover of business support activities improved over the last three months (+0.6%) and over the year (+1.7%).

Revisions

The change in March 2015 was revised by +0.2 points in information and communication and by –0.2 points in real estate activities. That same month, the change was revised by +0.1 point in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles and by –0.1 point in business support activities. It remained unchanged in transportation and storage.
