In August 2015, the turnover dropped in the wholesale trade and went on increasing in Information and communication Turnover in the wholesale trade and business services - August 2015

In August 2015, the turnover fell sharply in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (–1.5%). Conversely, it increased in information and communication (+0,5%) and in transportation and storage (+0.3%). It was virtually stable in business support activities (–0.1%) and it decreased slightly in real estate activities (–0.2%).

Every index in this issue is in value (tax excluded), seasonally and working day adjusted (SA-WDA). The commentary shows variations of subsections by decreasing contribution. The contribution of a subsection depends on the extent of the change and on its weight.

In August 2015, the turnover fell sharply in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles (–1.5%). Conversely, it increased in information and communication (+0,5%) and in transportation and storage (+0.3%). It was virtually stable in business support activities (–0.1%) and it decreased slightly in real estate activities (–0.2%).

Sharp decline in the wholesale trade, except of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In August, the turnover of the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles declined strongly (–1.5%) after an increase in July (+0.9%). The decline was particularly sharp in wholesale of household goods (–2.7%), in the wholesale of information and communication equipment (–5,1%) and in the wholesale on a fee or contract basis (–2,3%). Conversely it increased in the wholesale of other machinery, equipment and supplies (+1.0%).

The turnover of the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles went up over the last three months (+0.6%) as over the year (+0.4%).

Slight increase in transportation and storage

In August, the turnover of transportation and storage improved slightly (+0.3%) after a virtual stability in July (+0.1%). It bounced back in postal and courier activities (+2.5 % after –2.4%). It increased slightly in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+0.4%) and in air transport (+0.2%). It was almost unchanged in land transport and transport via pipelines (–0.1 %) and in water transport (–0.1 %).

The turnover of transportation and storage increased over the last three months (+0.5%) and over the year (+1.4%).

Slight decline in real estate activities

In August the turnover of real estate activities declined again albeit at a lower pace than in the previous month (–0.2% after –0.5% in July). It went down over the last three months (–0.8%). However, it improved over the year (+1.6%).

Information and communication was up for the third month in a row

The turnover of information and communication rose once again in August (+0.5%, after +0.8% in July and +0.7% in June). It improved notably in telecommunications (+1.0%) and in publishing activities (+1.1%). On the contrary, it diminished in information service activities (–0.8%) and in programming and broadcasting activities (–0.5%).

The turnover of information and communication increased over the last three months (+1,4%) and over the year (+3.3%).

Near stability in business support activities

In August the turnover of business support activities was virtually stable (–0.1%) after six consecutive months of increase (+0.5% on average per month since February). It declined in professional, scientific and technical activities (–0.5%): in particular, it fell in activities of head offices (–0.9%), in advertising and market research (–1.6%) and in scientific research and development (–2.4%). In contrast, the turnover continued to increase in administrative and support service activities (+0.6%), mostly in employment activities (+2.4%) and in office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+1.3%). However the turnover fell back sharply in services to buildings and landscape activities (–2,9% after +2,0%).

The turnover in business support activities improved over the last three months (+0.9%) and over the year (+2.3%).

Revisions

The change in July has been revised by +0.4 points in information and communication and by +0.2 points in transportation and storage. That same month, the change has been revised by +0.1 points in business support activities and by –0.1 points in the wholesale trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles, and in real estate activities.
