In April 2013 overall producer prices of agricultural products dipped (-0.3 % compared to March) ; over one year they rose by 8.6 %.

Cereals prices did not change much in April (-0.2 %). Wheat prices remained at a high level. Bad weather aroused fears regarding the next harvests in Europe and in the United States. On the other hand, maize prices decreased noticeably, due to the high quantities still available in Ukraine and bullish forecasts for the next global crop.

Oleaginous prices went down in April (-1.5 %), mainly due to the decrease of sunflower prices, whose supply is abundant.

Potatoes prices doubled in April compared to the same month last year (+133.8 %), due to a marked shortfall of supply in North-Western Europe.

Wines were more expensive in April (+0.7 %). Over one year, their prices surged by nearly 12 %. The prices for some PDO wines were sustained by the export demand. The less significant crop last autumn led to a rise in prices for other wines.

Fresh fruits prices rose year-over-year (+4.8 %). The price of apple increased by 43 % due to a considerable slump in production in Europe. Conversely, strawberry was 21% less expensive despite a limited production, which was affected by cool temperatures : the dull weather led the consumers to turn aside from this fruit.

vegetableProducer prices of vegetables

The prices of fresh vegetables increased year-over-year (+15.2 %). On the supply side, the lack of luminosity slowed the greenhouse cultivation of tomatoes, and the cool temperatures slowed the growing of caulifowers ; the onion crop was less abundant than the previous one. On the demand side, the leek consumption benefited from the cool weather; the consumers turned partly away from chicory.

pigProducer prices of big cattle and pigs

On a seasonally adjusted basis, price of animals increased a little in April (+0.6 %), as a result of a limited number of available animals. Prices of eggs kept on tumbling, having decreased by half over a year due to a strong pick up of the supply, as a consequence of the recovery of the production capacities.
