The aim of the VPP survey is to fulfil the demand-side requirements of the European regulation on tourism statistics.
It provides Eurostat with detailed information on the tourist trips made by residents of mainland France, on the characteristics of visitors and their trips, and on the associated expenditure.
These results are used to compile the tourism satellite account.
In addition to the economic approach to demand, the VPP survey can also shed light on social issues, in particular by examining the social conditions surrounding tourist travel.
The VPP survey will replace the SDT survey from 2026.
Joint analysis of the two series (VPP and SDT) is not recommended, as they are not produced using the same methodology.
