Présentation de l'opération

Organisme producteur :

Insee - DSE

Type d'opération :

Survey

Objectifs :

The gross trade margin, which measures the surplus generated by the business (sales of goods minus acquisition costs), is integrated in the computation process of the gross domestic product (GDP). By product, the gross trade margin is included in the resources-uses balance of the national accounts.

The objective of the survey is to collect the distribution of the gross trade margins by product during the financial year 2012, at a level of aggregation of product fine enough to restore margins by product of the resources-uses balance.

The survey takes the form of a complementary part of the annual sectoral survey for the financial year 2012 (ESA 2012), on a limited number of sectors of the trade activities defined according to two criteria: their weight in the total gross trade margin in the French economy and the degree of dispersion of their sales between different products.

Thèmes abordés :

The surveyed companies are required to give the total trade margin made during the financial year 2012 and then to break this amount down by product (the product classification used in the questionnaire is the same as that used in the questionnaire of the ESA 2012).

Champ de l'opération

Champ géographique :

Metropolitan France and overseas departments

Champ(s) statistique(s) couvert(s) :

The statistical scope covers the following areas of NAF rev. 2:

- supermarkets (subclass 47.11D ),
- hypermarkets (subclass 47.11F ),
- DIY superstores (subclass 47.52B ),
- retail sale of furniture (subclass 47.59A ),
- retail sale via home-shopping by general catalogue (subclass 47.91A ).

No size criterion is involved in defining the scope of the survey.

Caractéristiques techniques

Unité statistique enquêtée :

Company (legal unit identified by a French "SIREN" number)

Périodicité de l'opération :

aperiodic survey

Période et mode de collecte :

The data collection took place between February and September 2013, simultaneously with the data collection of ESA 2012. The paper questionnaire of the trade margins survey tradehas been sent to companies in the same letter containing the ESA 2012 questionnaire.

The units surveyed could also answer to the survey through internet using a downloaded file that they had to fill and then to upload in the secured portal of responses to surveys conducted by INSEE.

Historique :

Plan de sondage :

The sampling frame and the survey sample are subsets of those of the ESA 2012; the survey sampling method on trade margins is thus derived from the annual sectorial survey 2012 - the latter being based on a stratified sample according to size classes crossed with business sectors.

The survey sample on trade margins, sized of approximately 4,000 units, is thus composed of legal units belonging to the sample of the ESA 2012 whose main activity corresponded to one of the five subclasses listed in the "Statistics coverage" section.

Méthodologie :

Data are checked and corrected at an individual level during the collection by the team managing the survey: this team contacts by phone or e-mail units which present some inconsistent or implausible data, in order to validate or to correct it.

After the end of the collection, some more complex checks are applied. This step, called "data cleaning step", also includes some individual corrections.

Finally comes the step of "non-response correction and calibration", which distinguishes the partial non-response correction and the total non-response correction (which aims to change weight units to ensure that the exploitation of the answers will be exactly representative of the scope of the survey).
