In October 2024, the volume of sales decreased in both wholesale trade and retail trade
In October 2024*, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased again over a month (‑0.6% after ‑1.6% in September), driven mainly by the further decline in sales in “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemicals, etc.: ‑2.6% as in September).
The volume of sales also decreased in October 2024 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.5% after ‑0.9%), due to the downturn in specialised stores (‑0.8% after +0.1%) and a further fall in retail trade not in stores (‑4.5% after ‑3.5%). Conversely, sales in non specialised stores picked up (+1.3% after ‑2.0%).
Lastly, in October 2024, the volume of sales bounced back in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.7% after ‑1.1%), mostly led by the sale of motor vehicles (+2.1% after ‑0.8%).
From August to October 2024, the volume of sales decreased by 0.6% compared to the same three months a year before
The cumulative volume of sales of the three months under review (August to October 2024) in overall trade was 0.6% lower than that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased sharply in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑5.4%) and more moderately in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.4%). Conversely, the volume of sales increased in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.7%): it grew in retail trade not in stores (+9.8%), in specialised stores (+3.8%) and in non-specialised stores (+1.8%).

Early retail trade estimate for November 2024
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to increase in November 2024 (+0.3% over a month). Over the cumulative three months from September to November, it would be 2.5% higher than in the same three months a year earlier.
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in September 2024 has been revised downwards by 0.2 points compared to the previous release, and now stands at ‑1.3% (after rounding).
