In March 2024, the volume of sales in trade decreased by 1.4% over a month, after a rise of 1.6% in February.

In March 2024, the volume of sales dropped in the three main trade sectors
In March 2024, the volume of sales in the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased by 1.7% over a month, after +1.9% in February. This downturn was mainly due to the information and communication equipment (‑7.8% after +8.9%), the household goods (‑2.3% after +0.2%) and the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: ‑2.2% after +3.2%).
The volume of sales also decreased in March 2024 in the wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑2.7% after +2.6%), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (‑3.4% after +3.1%).
Lastly, the volume of sales decreased slightly in March 2024 in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑0.2% after +0.5%). While it dropped in specialised stores (‑0.4% after +0.8%) and in non specialised stores (‑0.5% after ‑0.2%), it sped up in the retail trade not in stores (+2.3% after +1.0%). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales dwindled for the “other goods” (pharmaceutical products, clothing, footwear, etc.: ‑1.3% after +0.9%) and for the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: ‑1.5% after +0.6%). Conversely, it increased in all other sub-sectors, particularly for food, beverages and tobacco (+1.6% after +3.2%).
Early retail trade estimate for April 2024
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in April 2024 (‑0.4% over a month). From February to April 2024, it would be 1.3% higher than that of the same three months a year earlier.

The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2024 went up by 0.7% over a year
The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2024 in overall trade was 0.7% higher than that of the first quarter of 2023. This growth was observed in the three main trade sectors: the retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.8%), the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.5%) and the wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+0.4%). Within the retail trade sector, the volume of sales was up in specialised stores (+1.4%) and in retail trade not in stores (+1.1%) while it went down in non-specialised stores (‑0.4%).
Revisions
The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in February 2024 is unchanged at +1.6% (after rounding) compared to the previous release.
