The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In February 2023, the volume of sales in trade increased again over a month (+0.2%), but less markedly than in January (+0.6%).

In February 2023, the growth in the volume of sales was concentrated in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles

In February 2023, the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles sped up (+1.6% over a month after +1.1% in January), led by the sale of motor vehicles (+2.4% after +1.3%).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles was stable in February 2023 (0.0%) after a slight growth in January (+0.2%). It bounced back in the “other specialised wholesale” (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: +0.4% after ‑2.1%), and fell again sharply in the agricultural raw materials and live animals (‑2.0%, as in January).

Lastly, the volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles stalled in February 2023 (‑0.1% after +1.0% in January), both in specialised stores (‑0.1% after +1.2%) and in non-specialised stores (0.0% after +0.9%). It picked up slightly in retail trade not in stores (+0.2% after a stability in January). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales fell particularly in the “other household equipment” (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: ‑1.4% after +3.4%), while it went up sharply again in the information and communication equipment (+2.1% after +3.1%).

Early retail trade estimate for March 2023

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in March 2023 (‑1.4% over a month). Over the first quarter of 2023, it would be 1.7% lower than in the first quarter of 2022.

From December 2022 to February 2023, the volume of sales decreased compared to the same three months a year before (‑0.9%)

The volume of sales of the three months under review (December 2022 to February 2023) in overall trade went down (‑0.9%) compared to that of the same period a year earlier. It decreased both in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.4%), and retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (‑1.6%). In contrast, it grew in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.1%). Within retail trade, the year-on-year volume of sales fell significantly in non-specialised stores (‑3.5%) and in retail trade not in stores (‑3.7%), while it was virtually stable in specialised stores (+0.1%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in January 2023 is unchanged at +0.6% (after rounding), compared to the previous release.
