In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In October 2022, the volume of sales in trade decreased (-0.8%), following a growth in September (+0.6%).

In October 2022, the sales volume fell in the three main trade sectors

In October 2022, the volume of sales in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (-1.3% after +1.3% in September). It decreased in specialised stores (-1.4% after +2.4%), in non-specialised stores (-1.3% after +0.2%), and in retail trade not in stores (-0.9% after -0.5%). The drop in specialised stores was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: -1.6% after +2.2%), and the "other household equipment" (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: -2.8% after +3.9%).

The volume of sales also fell in October 2022 in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (-1.4% after +0.6% in September), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (-1.9% after +0.5%).

Lastly, the volume of sales in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased, albeit more slightly (-0.3% after +0.2% in September). The decrease is particularly due to the "other specialised wholesale" (fuels, wood, chemical products, etc.: -1.5% after +2.1%), and food, beverages and tobacco (-1.2% after a stability in September).

Early estimate

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in November 2022 (-1.1%). From September to November 2022, it may have increased by 0.8% compared to that of the same period one year earlier.

From August to October 2022 the volume of sales increased by 1.7% over a year

The volume of sales of the three months under review (August to October 2022) in overall trade went up (+1.7%) compared to that of the same period in 2021. It grew in wholesale trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.8%), in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+1.4%), and in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+2.5%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+2.3%) and non-specialised stores (+0.6%). In contrast, it declined in retail trade not in stores (-0.5%).

Revisions

The monthly percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in September 2022 is left unchanged at +0.6% (after rounding), compared to the previous release.
