The balance of opinion related to expected sales is stable

In November 2022, the balance of opinion on ordering intentions has retreated and has moved away from its average. The one about the general business outlook has increased again and has returned to its average level. The balance of opinion on expected sales is stable and remains below its average. The one about past sales has advanced for the fourth month in a row and has moved away from its average. Finally, compared to last month, fewer business managers consider that the evolution of their business situation is difficult to forecast.

The balance of opinion related to the recent change in the workforce size has rebounded slightly, while the one concerning the workforce size for the next three months has diminished for the third month in a row. Both balances of opinion lie below their averages.

The balance associated with the current level of stocks has recovered markedly and has moved closer to its average. Finally, the bi-monthly balance of opinion related to the cash position has improved compared to September and has moved above its own.

In November 2022, in retail trade, the business climate has gained one point (at 93) but remains below its long-term average (100). This improvement is mainly the result of an increase in the balances on the past workforce size and on the stock level.

The balance of opinion of retailers on the activity prospects for the next three months has increased again and has moved above its long-term average. The one on ordering intentions has diminished sharply and has moved away from its own. The balance concerning expected sales is stable, below its average.

The balance about the current level of stocks has rebounded and has moved above its average.

The balance of opinion on the expected selling prices has diminished slightly but remains high. The one on past prices has increased markedly, in particular in specialised retail trade, and has reached its highest level since the beginning of the series (1991) in the whole sector as well as in specialised retail trade.

Finally, the balance of opinion related to the cash position has improved sharply and has moved above its long-term average.

In trade and repair of vehicles, the business climate indicator has decreased slightly

In trade and repair of vehicles, the business climate has lost one point (at 98). It lies thus just below its long term-term average (100). This degradation is mainly due to the decrease of the balance of opinion related to the expected workforce size.

The balance of opinion on the general business outlook has increased slightly but remains far below its average. The one on ordering intentions has edged up and moved towards its own. The balances of opinion related to past and expected sales have increased slightly but remain below their averages.

The balance related to the current level of stocks has increased markedly, but remains far below its long-term average.

About employment, the balance on the change in the workforce size over the last three months is stable, above its average, while the one related to the change for the next three months has diminished and has returned to its own.

The balance of opinion related to expected prices has edged down markedly, after having reached its highest level in October since the beginning of the series (2003). The one on past prices has increased again and has reached a record level since the beginning of the series (2003).

Finally, the balance of opinion on the cash position has deteriorated and has moved towards its average.

The business climate for October 2022 in trade and repair of vehicles has not been revised (after rounding).

The whole sector “retail trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles” is composed for 70% of retail trade and for 30% of trade and repair of motor vehicles and motor cycles.

The three composite indicators of business climate presented here are estimated independently of one another. Thus, that of the whole of the retail trade and in trade and repair of vehicles cannot be deduced from the two others. The same balances of opinion are included into their calculations, but they are not assigned the same weightings. Also, the indicators are scaled to have a long-run average of 100 and a standard deviation of 10. The three climate series do not have the same historical beginning, so their standardisation differs slightly. Discrepancies may therefore appear from time to time.

For the three-modality questions, a balance of opinion is the difference between weighted percentage of “increase” or “above normal” answers and weighted percentage of “decrease” or “below normal” answers.

Since the definitive data of April 2020, the way of correcting non-response has been modified. The usual method was to fill in missing answers by carrying on past answers from non-responding companies. The results are now computed on the sole basis of responding companies.

Company responses were collected between 27 October and 21 November 2022.
