In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In August 2022, the volume of sales in trade picked up (+2.3%), following a drop in July (-1.6%).

In August 2022, the sales volume bounced back in the three main trade sectors

In August 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles recovered strongly (+8.4% after -1.1% in July), especially in the sale of motor vehicles (+10.6% after +0.2%).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade also picked up in August 2022 (+1.6% after -1.7% in July). It went up in all the sub-sectors, particularly in the household goods (+1.8% after -1.7%), the "other machinery, equipment and supplies" (+2.9% after -0.6%), and the "other specialised wholesale" (+2.1% after -4.0%).

Lastly, the volume of sales in retail trade also started to grow again in August 2022 (+1.0% after -1.5% in July), both in specialised stores (+1.4% after -2.0%) and retail trade not in stores (+1.6% after -0.9%). Concerning non-specialised stores, the volume of sales was virtually stable (+0.1% after -1.0%). Within specialised stores, the rebound in the volume of sales was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +1.1% after -1.2%), and the cultural and recreation goods (+7.2% after -4.5%).

Early estimate

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased slightly in September 2022 (+0.2%). Over the third quarter of 2022, it may have increased by 1.0% compared to that of the third quarter of 2021.

The volume of sales of the past three months was virtually stable over a year (-0.1%)

The volume of sales of the three months under review (June to August 2022) in overall trade was virtually stable (-0.1%) compared to that of the same period one year earlier. It fell in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−2.9%), was almost unchanged in wholesale trade (-0.1%), and went up in retail trade (+1.2%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in non-specialised stores (+2.8%) and specialised stores (+0.5%). In contrast, it declined in retail trade not in stores (−1.0%).

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in July 2022 has been revised upwards, at -1.6% (after rounding) instead of -1.8% initially published.
