Business outlooks, both general and personal, have deteriorated
The opinion of the business managers of small building firms about their expected activity for the next three months, for both their company and the whole sector, has degraded again between July and October. The corresponding balances diminishe for the third quarter in a row, both dropping below their long-term average. The balance of opinion about the general business outlook for the sector even reaches its lowest level since July 2016.
Craftsmen maintain their opinion regarding the change in their activity for the last three month: the corresponding balance stands close to its average.
The opinion of building craftsmen on the change in their workforce size remains unchanged
In October, craftsmen’ balance of opinion about their workforce size over the past three month is stable, slightly above its long-term average, as is the balance of opinion regarding their expected change in workforce size for the next three months.
Recruitment difficulties remain significant
In October, 63% of craftsmen have reported experiencing recruiting difficulties, a proportion that, although diminishing slightly, remains way above its long-term average. The share of building craftsmen declaring that they are training apprentices drops slightly in October: it stands at 39% and is almost back to its average level.

The response rate, while being slightly above what it was during last July survey, remains although lower than usual.
