In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In June 2022, the volume of sales in trade kept increasing (+0.4% after +0.6% in May).

In June 2022, an increase in the volume of sales concentrated in wholesale trade

In June 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade started to grow again (+1.0%) following a virtual stability in May (+0.1%). The increase was mainly led by food, beverages and tobacco (+1.9% after +0.4%), and agricultural raw materials and live animals (+5.9% after −1.4%).

In June 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell back (−1.0% after +2.3%), mostly due to the motor vehicles (−1.6% after +2.1%).

The volume of sales in retail trade decreased in June 2022 (−0.2% after +0.7% in May) due to specialised stores (−1.3% after +1.6%). It bounced back in non-specialised stores (+1.3% after −2.0%) and slowed down in retail trade not in stores (+0.9% after +5.3%). Within specialised stores, the decrease was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: −2.4% after +3.5%).

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in July 2022 (−0.9%). From May to July 2022, it may have increased by 3.3% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier.

The volume of sales of the second quarter of 2022 in overall trade increased by 2.3% when compared with that of the second quarter of 2021.
