In May 2022, manufacturing turnover bounced back (+1.4%) Turnover in industry and construction - May 2022
In May 2022, turnover bounced back in the manufacturing industry (+1.4% after –0.5% in April); however it fell back in industry as a whole (–0.6% after +2.0% in April).
Export turnover bounced back in May (+1.2% after –2.0% in April).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
The variation of the raw serie was due in particular to the integration of late or rectified declarations.
INSEE now favours the industrial production index to measure activity in industry. This short-term economic indicator is published 35 days after the end of the month against 60 days after the end of the month for the turnover indices in industry. This indices will continue to be published monthly, but in a more concise form: from August 2022, the issue of Informations Rapides will also only contain the graph and the access link to all the series of indices available in the database of the website www.insee.fr. Of course, the details of the data available online will remain unchanged.
In May 2022, turnover bounced back in the manufacturing industry (+1.4% after –0.5% in April); however it fell back in industry as a whole (–0.6% after +2.0% in April).
Export turnover bounced back in May (+1.2% after –2.0% in April).
In May 2022, turnover bounced back strongly in “other manufacturing”
In May, turnover bounced back strongly in “other manufacturing” (+3.6% after –1.7% in April), particularly in the chemical industry (+9.5% after –7.9%). Due to significant price changes, it rose sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+5.8% after stability in April) and fell back strongly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (–5.9% after +8.9% in April); in this sector, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply was the main driver of the downward trend while mining and quarrying as water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities were up. Turnover increased in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.0% after +0.7% in April) and was almost stable in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.1% after +0.9%). Conversely, turnover fell back markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment (–6.4% after +0.6% in April).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry went up sharply over a year (+16.8%), due to significant price rises
Mainly as a result of the soaring producer prices, the turnover of the last three months went up sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year, in the manufacturing industry (+16.8%), and even more in industry as a whole (+27.5%). The increase was observed in all major sectors. The growth over a year was particularly pronounced in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+70.5%), with extremely important price rises, in “other manufacturing” (+17.6%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+94.5%). The increase was also substantial in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+11.1%), in the manufacture of transport equipment (+10.8%) and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.7%).
Only in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers was a slight decrease recorded (–1.7%).
Revisions
The percentage change of the turnover index in April 2022 in the manufacturing industry is revised upwards at –0.5% instead of –0.7% in the previous publication; it is revised upwards too at +2.0% instead of +1.3% for industry as a whole.
