Warning

In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In April 2022, the volume of sales in trade kept decreasing (−1.4% after −0.4% in March).

In April 2022, the sales volume fell back in the three main trade sectors

In April 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade fell further (−1.2% after −0.6% in March). The drop was particularly noticeable in wholesale on a fee or contract basis (−3.2% after a virtual stability in March). The volume of sales bounced back in information and communication equipment (+2.9% after −1.9%).

In April 2022, the volume of sales in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles decreased more sharply than in March (−4.0% after −1.0%), especially for motor vehicles (−5.3% after −1.6%).

The volume of sales in retail trade dwindled in April 2022 (−0.6% after +0.2% in March). It dropped both in specialised stores (−1.1% after a stability in March) and retail trade not in stores (−2.9% after +0.4%). The volume of sales sped up in non-specialised stores (+0.8% after +0.4%). Within specialised stores, the decrease was mainly led by the information and communication equipment (−13.8% after −1.1%), and the "other household equipment" (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: −2.4% after +0.6%).

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have remained virtually stable in May 2022 (+0.1%). From March to May 2022, it may have increased by 5.9% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier, with a base effect partly due to the start of third national lockdown implemented on April 3, 2021.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased by 3.9% over a year

The volume of sales of the three months under review (February to April 2022) in overall trade increased by 3.9% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. It grew sharply both in wholesale trade (+4.1%) and retail trade (+6.7%), with a favourable base effect especially due to the closure of non-essential stores during the third lockdown. In contrast, the volume of sales fell back in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−3.2%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased strongly over a year in specialised stores (+11.7%). It also went up in non-specialised stores (+4.8%), while it decreased markedly in retail trade not in stores (−9.8%), which had benefited during the third lockdown from the reinforced health measures targeting the in-store trade.

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in March 2022 is left unchanged at −0.4% (after rounding the figure), compared to the previous release.
