In April 2022, agricultural producer prices went up by 30.8% compared to April 2021 (after +27.1% in March 2022 compared to March 2021). This rise, due in particular to the surge in cereal and oilseed prices, was unprecedented: before March 2022, the highest rise measured year on year was +26.1% in March 2008. Excluding fruits and vegetables, agricultural producer prices rose by 34.3% year on year (after +30.3% in March); over one month they slowed down (+3.3% after +11.8%).

Slowdown of cereal prices over one month and acceleration year on year

In April 2022, cereal prices continued to go up but slowed down (+2.9% over one month) after their exceptional rise in March (+36.9%). This new rise owes much to the soaring soft wheat prices (+4.2% after +39.8%), due to the war in Ukraine, the international sanctions against Russia and the drought in the United States. Conversely, maize prices fell in April (–2.3% after +38.2%) due in particular to intensifying international competition. Cereal prices soared year on year (+75.5% after +68.6%).

Due to the war in Ukraine, the rise in oilseed prices remained sharp in April 2022 (+8.4% over one month) after the spectacular rise in March (+27.4%). Rapeseed prices decelerated (+10.8% after +25.2%), while sunflower prices (–0.9% after +43.0%) and soybean prices (–1.1% after +12.4%) fell slightly. Year on year, oilseed prices accelerated sharply (+96.4% after +70.8%).

More about French agricultural price indices

The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.

The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.

The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
