In March 2022, the sales volume in trade fell back (−0.4%) Sales volume in wholesale and retail trade - March 2022
In March 2022, the volume of sales in trade decreased (−0.4%), following a growth in February (+0.8%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In March 2022, the volume of sales in trade decreased (−0.4%), following a growth in February (+0.8%).
In March 2022, a drop in the volume of sales in wholesale trade and trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In March 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade dwindled (−0.6% after +1.6% in February). It fell sharply in agricultural raw materials and live animals (−10.8% after +0.6%). However, the volume of sales kept increasing in "other specialised wholesale" (+1.4%), but less than in February (+2.8%).
In March 2022, the volume of sales kept falling in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.6% after −0.5% in February), especially for motor vehicles (−1.0% after −0.9%).
The volume of sales in retail trade remained virtually stable in March 2022 (+0.1% after −0.1% in February). It slowed down both in non-specialised stores (+0.2% after +1.0%) and retail trade not in stores (+0.6% after +0.9%). The volume of sales almost maintained its level in specialised stores (−0.1% after −0.9%), with opposing trends: on the one hand a drop in automotive fuel (−1.3% after +0.6%) and food, beverages and tobacco (−0.6% after +1.0%), and, on the other hand, an increase in "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +0.3% after −3.4%) and "other household equipment" (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +0.5% after +1.1%).
Forecast
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected with slight variations in April 2022 (−0.1%). From February to April 2022, it may have increased by 6.9% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier, with a base effect partly due to the start of the third national lockdown on April 3, 2021.

The volume of sales of the first quarter increased by 3.7% over a year
The volume of sales of the first quarter of 2022 in overall trade increased by 3.7% when compared with that of the first quarter of 2021. It grew sharply both in wholesale trade (+4.2%) and retail trade (+5.4%), with a favourable base effect mainly due to the start of the third lockdown in some departments from March 19, 2021. In contrast, the volume of sales fell back in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.9%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased strongly over a year in specialised stores (+8.1%). It also went up in non-specialised stores (+4.2%), while it decreased markedly in retail trade not in stores (−3.8%), which had benefited in early 2021 from the reinforced health measures, including the closure of "non-essential" stores.
Revisions
The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in February 2022 has been revised slightly upwards, at +0.8% (after rounding the figure) instead of +0.7% initially published.
