In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In February 2022, the volume of sales in trade kept increasing (+0.7% after +1.1% in January).

In February 2022, an increase of the volume of sales concentrated in wholesale trade

In February 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade sped up (+1.6% after +1.2% in January), especially in "other specialised wholesale" (+3.1% after +0.2%). However, it dwindled in non specialised wholesale trade (−2.5% after +0.7%).

The volume of sales in retail trade fell back in February 2022 (−0.3% after +1.1% in January) essentially through a decrease of specialised stores (−1.1% after +1.5%). It bounced back in non-specialised stores (+0.8% after −0.6%), and slowed down in retail trade not in stores (+0.8% after +5.4%). Within specialised stores, the increase was led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: −3.8% after +3.2%). The volume of sales grew in all other sub-sectors, especially in cultural and recreation goods (+3.5% after −2.0% in January).

In February 2022, the volume of sales decreased in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.5%) after a 0.9% growth in January.

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased in March 2022 (−1.9%). Over the first quarter of 2022, it may have increased by 4.4% when compared with that of the first quarter of 2021.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased by 3.4% over a year

The volume of sales of the three months under review (December 2021 to February 2022) in overall trade increased by 3.4% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. It grew sharply both in wholesale trade (+3.9%) and retail trade (+4.2%), with a base effect favourable to in-store sales, due to the second lockdown until December 15, 2020, then to the curfew and the closure of some shopping centres in January 2021. In contrast, it fell back slightly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.3%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased strongly over a year in specialised stores (+6.4%). It also went up in non-specialised stores (+3.9%), while it decreased markedly in retail trade not in stores (−5.4%). The latter had benefited from a favorable context, especially due to the closure of non-essential stores during the second lockdown until December 15, 2020 but also to the reinforced curfew and the closure of some shopping centres in January 2021.

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in January 2022 has been revised upwards, at +1.1% (after rounding the figure) instead of +0.8% initially published.
