In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In January 2022, output in services fell again (–1.6%), after a decline in December (–0.7%).

In January 2022, output fell in most services sectors

In January 2022, alongside the fifth epidemic wave of Covid-19 (variant Omicron), output fell sharply in accommodation and food service activities (–7.0% after –2.6%), more in accommodation (–14.3% after +1.1%) than in food and beverage service activities (–5.1% after –3.5%). It declined again in professional, scientific and technical activities (–2.0% after –0.9%), transportation and storage (–1.5% after –2.6%), administrative and support services activities (–1.1% after –0.7%), and arts, entertainment and recreation (–1.3% after –11.2%). Output fell slightly in information-communication (–0.2% after +1.7%) and was almost stable in real estate activities (+0.1% after +6.5%).

Over a year, output was up sharply (+15.8%)

With a base effect due to the second lockdown from 29 October to 15 December 2020, followed by persistent restrictions at the beginning of 2021 on cultural and food service activities, the services output of the last three months was 15.8% higher than that of the same period a year earlier.

Output increased sharply year-on-year in accommodation and food service activities (+119.4%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+82.4%), transportation and storage (+15.0% with a doubling in air transport:+100.0%), professional, scientific and technical activities (+8.1%), administrative and support services activities (+8.2%), and information-communication (+8.4%). Growth was more moderate in real estate activities (+2.6%).

Revisions

The month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in December 2021 is left unchanged at –0.7%, compared to the previous release.
