Fall of cereal prices over one month, deceleration year on year

In February 2022, cereal prices fell again (–2.0% over one month after –1.3%) in the wake of the evolution of soft wheat prices (–2.3% after –2.8%). These were not yet affected by the war that started at the end of the month between Russia and Ukraine, two of the main soft wheat exporting countries. Conversely, maize prices rose in February (+1.4% after +1.5%), due in particular to droughts in Brazil and Argentina. Year on year, cereal prices slowed down, but continued nonetheless to rise very sharply (+21.1% after +25.2%).

Oilseed prices decelerated in February 2022 (+0.3% over one month after +4.4% in January), due to the fall in rapeseed prices (–1.0% after +6.5%). Conversely, sunflower prices rebounded (+3.9% after –6.1%) and soybean prices accelerated (+14.8% after +6.8%). Year on year, oilseed prices slowed down, while remaining on a strong upward trend (+46.3% after +53.2%).

More about French agricultural price indices

The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.

The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.

The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
