In January 2022, the volume of sales in trade picked up (+0.8%), following a fall in December 2021 (−1.1%).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the volume of sales in wholesale and retail trade index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In January 2022, the volume of sales in trade picked up (+0.8%), following a fall in December 2021 (−1.1%).
In January 2022, a rebound in the volume of sales in wholesale trade and retail trade, but not in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles
In January 2022, the volume of sales in wholesale trade recovered (+1.1% after −1.7% in December 2021), especially in "other machinery, equipment and supplies" (+5.2% after −1.6%). It, however, kept decreasing in food, beverages and tobacco (−1.4% after −2.5%).
The volume of sales in retail trade also bounced back in January 2022 (+0.9% after −0.5% in December 2021), both in specialised stores (+1.3% after −0.7%) and retail trade not in stores (+4.2% after −4.1%). Nevertheless, it dwindled in non-specialised stores (−0.6% after +1.0%). Within specialised stores, the increase was mainly led by the "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: +3.3% after +0.4%). In contrast, the volume of sales fell back markedly in food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (−2.9% after +0.4% in December 2021).
In January 2022, the volume of sales decreased slightly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−0.2% after +0.3% in December 2021). While it fell back in the sale of motor vehicle parts and accessories (−1.8% after +2.1%), it grew slightly in the sale of motor vehicles (+0.2% after a virtual stability in December 2021).
Forecast
According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have decreased by 0.7% in February 2022. From December 2021 to February 2022, it may have increased by 3.8% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased by 6.0% over a year
The volume of sales of the three months under review (November 2021 to January 2022) in overall trade increased by 6.0% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. It grew sharply in retail trade (+9.7%), with a base effect due to the restrictive measures of the second lockdown in December 2020, then to the strict curfew and the postponed winter sales in January 2021. It also went up in wholesale trade (+4.7%), and in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+3.4%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased strongly over a year in specialised stores (+14.4%). The growth was also sharp in non-specialised stores (+6.8%), while the volume of sales decreased in retail trade not in stores (−3.0%).
Revisions
The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in December 2021 has been revised slightly upwards, at −1.1% instead of −1.2% initially published.
