In January 2022, manufacturing turnover slowed down sharply (+0.3%) Turnover in industry and construction - January 2022
In January 2022, turnover slowed down sharply in the manufacturing industry (+0.3% after +2.4% in December); it continued to grow at a steady pace in industry as a whole (+1.7% after +2.3% in December).
Export turnover kept rising in January (+2.0% after +3.8% in December).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In January 2022, turnover increased mainly in the manufacture of transport equipment and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products
In January, turnover kept rising in the manufacture of transport equipment (+2.5% after +7.1% in December) and increased sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+4.8% after –0.5%), due to a significant price rise. Turnover also increased in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.4% after +1.8% in December). Conversely, turnover fell back in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.6% after –0.2%) and fell back in “other manufacturing” (–0.4% after +2.8%). Finally, turnover was up slightly in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+6.2% after +1.9% in December), mainly due to the strong rise in prices in this sector; the increase was particularly marked in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (+7.7% after +2.5%).

Turnover in the manufacturing industry went up sharply over a year (+12.4%)
Mainly as a result of the soaring producer prices, the turnover of the last three months rose sharply compared to the same three months of the previous year, in the manufacturing industry (+12.4%), and even more in industry as a whole (+18.8%). The increase was observed in all major sectors. The increase over a year was particularly pronounced in mining and quarrying; energy; water supply; waste management (+47.2%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+75.4%), due to significant price rises. The increase was also pronounced in “other manufacturing” (+14.3%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+9.3%). Turnover also grew over a year in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+4.9%) and in the manufacture of transport equipment (+3.0%), although it went down in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (–5.0%).
Revisions
The percentage change of the turnover index in December 2021 in the manufacturing industry was revised slightly upwards at 2.4% instead of 2.3% in the previous publication; it was revised upwards at +2.3% instead of +1.9% for industry as a whole.
