Fall of cereal prices over one month, deceleration year on year

In January 2022, cereal prices fell again (–1.3% over one month after –2.8%). This fall reflects the fall in soft wheat prices (–2.8% after –3.9%), mainly due to upwardly revised world harvest prospects. Conversely, maize prices rebounded (+1.5% after –2.4%), due in particular to uncertainties over the tensions between Russia and Ukraine and droughts in Brazil and Argentina. Year on year, cereal prices slowed down, but continued nonetheless to rise very sharply (+25.2% after +37.7%).

Oilseed prices recovered in January 2022 (+4.4% over one month after –0.4% in December), due to the rebound in soybean prices (+6.8% after –0.7%) and rapeseed prices (+6.5% after –1.1%), while sunflower prices fell (–6.1% after +2.7%). Year on year, oilseed prices slowed down slightly, while remaining on a strong upward trend (+53.2% after +56.3%).

More about French agricultural price indices

The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.

The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonally adjusted.

The methodology of IPPAP is available on the Insee web site: https://www.insee.fr/en/metadonnees/source/indicateur/p1657/description
