In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In December 2021, output in services slipped (–0.7%), after a sharp rebound in November (+2.6%).

In December 2021, output fell in most services

In December 2021, output went down in most sectors. It declined sharply in arts, entertainment and recreation (–10.8% after +19.8%) and more moderately in transportation and storage (–2.7% after +6.4%) where all subsectors were down except for air transport (+6.7% after +10.0%). It fell back in professional, scientific and technical activities (–1.2% after +1.5%) – more particularly in architecture and engineering activities (–6.4% after +1.6%) – in accommodation and food service activities (–1.5% after +0.6%) and administrative and support service activities (–0.4% after +1.4%). Conversely, output bounced back sharply in real estate activities (+6.3% after –5.4%) and increased again in information-communication (+1.4% after +3.0%).

Over a year, output was up sharply (+13.8%)

With a base effect due to the restrictive measures of the second lockdown from 29 October to 15 December 2020, followed by continued restrictions at the end of 2020 on cultural and food service activities, the last quarter of 2021 output was 13.8% higher than that of the fourth quarter of 2020.

Output was up sharply year-on-year in accommodation and food service activities (+83.3%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+61.8%), professional, scientific and technical activities (+8.0%), transportation and storage (+12.4%), administrative and support service activities (+7.9%) and information-communication (+7.5%). It rose more moderately in real estate activities (+2.0%).

Revisions

The month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in November 2021 has been slightly revised downwards. Initially published at +2.7%, it is now evaluated at +2.6% after accounting for rounding.
