graphiqueTotal consumption of goods

- Source: INSEE
Engineered goods: sharp decrease
Consumption of engineered goods fell in January (–2.3% after –0.7%). This sharp decrease is mainly due to the fall in clothing consumption.
Durables: slight rebound
Purchases of durable goods rebounded slightly (+0.8% after –3.3%). This increase is mainly due to the rebound in purchases of housing equipment, which still remain above their pre-crisis level. While remaining well below their pre-crisis level, spending on transportation equipment also rebounded, driven by increased purchases of demonstration vehicles and despite a drop in new car sales.
Textile-clothing: sharp decline
Clothing-textile spending decreased strongly in January (–14.0% after +4.6%), in particular because spending were significantly lower than in previous years during the winter sales.
Other engineered goods: further slight increase
In January, consumption of "other manufactured goods" continued to slightly increase (+0.3% after +0.2%). This increase comes in particular from purchases of SARS-CoV-2 self-tests.
