In January 2022, the prices of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets decreased by 0.1% over a month, after +0.3% in December. In large and predominantly food stores, these prices were stable over a month, after +0.3% in December.

Excluding hyper and supermarkets, prices increased by 0.3% over a month, after +0.1% in December.

Considering all kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods increased by 0.1% over a month, after +0.2% in December.

Year on year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets are accelerating again

Compared with the same month last year, the prices of frequently purchased goods sold in hyper and supermarkets accelerated for the second consecutive month: +0.7% in January, after +0.5% in December and +0.2% in November. In large and predominantly food stores, the prices also rose by 0.7% year on year.

In the other kinds of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods rose by 1.6% year on year, after +1.4% in October (last month for which year-over-year can be calculated, given the suspension of field collection in November and December 2020).

Considering all types of stores, the prices of frequently purchased goods increased by 1.1% year on year, after +0.5% in October (last month for which year-over-year can be calculated, given the suspension of field collection in November and December 2020).

Year on year, food prices in hyper and supermarkets accelerated for the third consecutive month

Month on month, the prices of food (excluding fresh produces) sold in hyper and supermarkets rose by 0.1%, after +0.3% in December. Year on year, these prices accelerated for the third consecutive month: +0.9% in January, after +0.6% in December, +0.3% in November and +0.1% in October.

The prices of meat sold in hyper and supermarkets fell by 0.1% month on month, after +0.4% in December. Year on year, these prices accelerated: +1.7%, after +1.2% in December.

The prices of beverages sold in hyper and supermarkets increased by 0.2% over a month, after being stable in December. Year on year, the prices of these products slowed down: +0.2%, after +0.4% in December.

The prices of other food products (excluding fresh food) increased by 0.2% over a month, after +0.4% in December. Year on year, the prices of these products accelerated: +0.8%, after +0.5% in December.

Year on year, the prices of cleaning and personal care products declined

Month on month, the prices of cleaning and personal care products sold in hyper and supermarkets fell by 1.0%, after +0.4% in December. Year on year, the prices of these products declined: –0.5% in January, as in the previous month.

For further information

The price index of frequently purchased goods in hyper and supermarkets is mainly calculated using scanner data (75%), whose collection has not been affected by the health crisis, and for the remaining part, using prices collected by INSEE collectors in physical outlets. The price index of beverage in hyper and supermarkets is carried out by 100% using scanner data, whereas that of meat by 30%, that of other food products by 76% and that of cleaning and personal care products by 98%.

The price index in the other kinds of stores is calculated only with prices collected by collectors in physical outlets.

The price collection carried out by collectors on the field was adjourned in November and December (after being adjourned from the 16 March to the 15 June of 2020) and anew from the 20 March 2021 or the 3 April 2021 (depending on departments under lockdown) to the 30 May 2021. INSEE introduced new collection methods (price collection on line, price collection by phone, increased use of scanner data) but the quality of the indices did not allow to publish the indices from April to June 2020 and 2021 and from November to December 2020 and 2021, for the others kinds of stores than hyper and supermarkets.
