In December 2021, output bounced back markedly in the manufacture of transport equipment

In December 2021, output fell back in “other manufacturing” (–1.4% after –0.3%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–2.1% after +1.2%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–1.7% after +0.1%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (–2.3% after +8.1%). On the contrary, it bounced back sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (+11.3% after –4.6%): it picked up strongly in the manufacture of other transport equipment (+11.0% after −13.0%) and increased again in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (+11.7% after +10.1%). It also recovered in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+0.5% after –1.4%).

In December 2021, output remained in decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It plunged in the manufacture of transport equipment (−19.2%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−14.3%) and in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−22.4%). The decrease was more moderate in “other manufacturing” (−4.8%), in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−4.5%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−3.8%) and in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–1.5%). Output was close to its February 2020 level in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+0.1%).

Over a year, manufacturing output declined slightly (−0.5%)

Output of the fourth quarter of 2021 was lower than the same quarter of 2020 in the manufacturing industry (−0.5%), as well as in the whole industry (−0.5%).

Over this one-year period, output plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−9.9%), particularly in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−19.2%) which was strongly impacted by the semiconductor shortage. It diminished in “other manufacturing” (–0.5%) as well as in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–0.3%). Conversely, it went up in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+4.0%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+2.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+8.8%).

The evolution of the November 2021 manufacturing index is unrevised

The evolution of the manufacturing index between October and November 2021 remains at −0.6%, while the evolution of the whole industry index is revised downwards by 0.1 points (after rounding, at −0.5% instead of −0.4%) due to raw data revisions.
