The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.

All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).

In October 2021, the volume of sales in trade was stable (0.0%), following a fall in September (−1.1%).

In October 2021, a stability of the volume of sales in trade

In October 2021, the volume of sales kept decreasing in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−1.1% after −1.8% in September), especially for motor vehicles (−1.5% after −2.9%).

The volume of sales in wholesale trade recovered slightly (+0.2% in October after −1.4% in September). It bounced back in "other specialised wholesale" (+1.6% after −1.6%) and dwindled in food, beverages and tobacco (−2.6% after +2.4%).

The volume of sales in retail trade remained almost unchanged in October (−0.1% after −0.1% in September). It decreased in specialised stores (−0.3% after +1.0%), bounced back slightly in retail trade not in stores (+0.6% after −6.3%) and was virtually stable in non-specialised stores (+0.1% after a stability in September). Within specialised stores, the volume of sales dwindled in "other goods" (clothing, footwear, leather goods, etc.: −0.8% after +2.3%), food, beverages and tobacco (−1.0% after +0.2%) and automotive fuel (−0.2% after +0.6%). It sped up in other household equipment (furniture, appliances, hardware, etc.: +0.6% after +0.2%) and recovered in cultural and recreation goods (+1.0% after −1.0%), as well as in information and communication equipment (+0.5% after −2.8% in September).

Forecast

According to early estimates, the sales volume in retail trade except that of motor vehicles and motorcycles is expected to have increased by 1.1% in November 2021. From September to November, it may have increased by 10.5% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier, with a base effect due to the start of the second lockdown on October 29, 2020.

The volume of sales of the past three months increased by 2.0% over a year

The volume of sales of the three months under review (August to October 2021) in overall trade increased by 2.0% when compared with that of the same period one year earlier. It grew both in wholesale trade (+3.4%) and retail trade (+3.9%). On the contrary, it fell markedly in the trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (−7.4%). Within retail trade, the volume of sales increased over a year in specialised stores (+4.2%), in non-specialised stores (+3.0%), and in retail trade not in stores (+6.1%).

Revisions

The percentage change in the overall sales volume trade in September 2021 is left unchanged at −1.1% (rounded number) compared to the previous release.
