In September 2021, manufacturing output fell back by 1.4% Industrial production index - September 2021
In September 2021, output fell back in the manufacturing industry (–1.4%, after +1.1%), as well as in the whole industry (–1.3%, after +1.0%). Compared to February 2020 (the last month before the first general lockdown), output remained in decline in the manufacturing industry (–5.9%), as well as in the whole industry (–5.2%).
All series are seasonally (SA) and working-day adjusted (WDA).
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the industrial production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
In September 2021, output fell back in the manufacturing industry (–1.4%, after +1.1%), as well as in the whole industry (–1.3%, after +1.0%). Compared to February 2020 (the last month before the first general lockdown), output remained in decline in the manufacturing industry (–5.9%), as well as in the whole industry (–5.2%).

In September 2021, output decreased sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment
In September 2021, output declined sharply in the manufacture of transport equipment (–8.4% after –1.8%). It also decreased in “other manufacturing” (–0.8% after +2.3%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (–0.7% after +0.9%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (–0.7% after –2.0%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (–2.3% after +3.4%). However it increased for the second consecutive month in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+1.3% after +2.4%).
In September 2021, output remained in decline compared to its February 2020 level in most industrial activities. It plummeted in the manufacture of transport equipment (−29.8%), both in the manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (−30.3%) and in the manufacture of other transport equipment (−29.4%). It also diminished sharply in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum (−11.1%). Output declined more moderately in “other manufacturing” (−2.6%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (−1.4%). Output was close to its February 2020 level in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (−0.6%) and in the manufacture of food products and beverages (−0.3%).

Over a year, manufacturing output increased (+2.7%)
In the manufacturing industry, output of the third quarter of 2021 went up compared to the same quarter of 2020 (+2.7%), as well as in the whole industry (+2.8%).
Over this one-year period, output expanded in “other manufacturing” (+3.7%), in the manufacture of machinery and equipment goods (+5.6%), in mining and quarrying, energy, water supply (+3.9%), in the manufacture of food products and beverages (+2.4%) and in the manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (+5.5%). On the contrary, it diminished in the manufacture of transport equipment (−5.5%).
The evolution of the August 2021 manufacturing index is unchanged
The evolution of the manufacturing index between July and August 2021 is unrevised at +1.1% (after rounding). The evolution in the whole industry output is also unchanged at +1.0%.
