Output in services rose again in August 2021 (+2.1%) Index of services production - August 2021
In August 2021, output in services sped up (+2.1% after + 1.0% in July). It was above the February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown) for the second straight month.
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In August 2021, output in services sped up (+2.1% after + 1.0% in July). It was above the February 2020 level (last month before the start of the first lockdown) for the second straight month.
In August 2021, output went up in a majority of sectors
In August 2021, output sped up in transportation and storage (+4.4% after +0.5%) where all activities were up except postal and courier activities (–2.8% after –7.7%). Output continued to recover in August in arts, entertainment and recreation (+11.8% after +10.4%), as well as in accommodation and food service activities (+5.2% after +9.1%). It increased in administrative and support services activities (+1.4% after +1.9%) and bounced back in professional, scientific and technical activities (+0.9% after –1.4%), and real estate activities (+2.2% after –0.4%). Conversely, it fell back in information-communication (–0.5% as in July), due to a sharp decline in telecommunications (–8.7% after +3.7%).
Output in services was above its February 2020 level (+2.8%) in most major sectors: information-communication (+10.3%), professional, scientific and technical activities (+4.5%), transportation and storage (+3.2% but –31.0% in air transport), and accommodation and food service activities (+1.9%). In the latter sector, output was sharply above its pre-crisis level in the food and beverage service activities sector (+5.2%), while it remained below it in accommodation (–9.8%), which is still deprived of a part of its professional and international customers. There was a sharp decline in arts, entertainment and recreation (–13.3%), and a more moderate drop in administrative and support services activities (–0.9%).

Over a year, output was up (+13.1%)
Due to a base effect linked to the health situation still uncertain in June-July-August 2020 after the first lockdown, output in the last three months (June to August 2021) was 13.1% higher than in the same period in 2020.
Output was thus up sharply year-on-year in professional, scientific and technical activities (+12.7%), administrative and support services activities (+16.5%), transportation and storage (+14.0%), accommodation and food service activities (+19.7%), information-communication (+9.3%), arts, entertainment and recreation (+23.7%) and real estate activities (+6.2%).
Revisions
The month-on-month percentage change in the index of services output in July 2021 has been revised upwards. Initially published at +0.4%, it is now evaluated at +1.0% after accounting for rounding.
