In July 2021, agricultural producer prices went up by 8.2% year on year. Excluding fruits and vegetables, they rose by 7.1% year on year (after +8.2%), but fell by 1.0% over one month (after –0.9%).

In July 2021, agricultural producer prices went up by 8.2% year on year. Excluding fruits and vegetables, they rose by 7.1% year on year (after +8.2%), but fell by 1.0% over one month (after –0.9%).

Fall in cereal prices over one month

In July 2021, cereal prices fell (–1.7% over one month after –5.2%). Maize prices went down (–8.2% after –11.0%), while soft wheat prices rebounded (+0.6% after –4.1%), due in particular to the lateness in the French harvest and the water shortages in the United States and Russia. Year on year, cereal prices slowed down again but remained very dynamic (+17.2% after +22.8% and +25.6%).

Oilseed prices rebounded in July 2021 (+2.0% after –2.5% in June) due in particular to the droughts in North America. Soybean prices rose (+3.8% after +0.5%) more than rapeseed prices (+2.6% after –2.8%), while sunflower prices fell (–1.2% after –2.1%). Year on year, oilseed prices soared (+43.7% after +44.8%).

Acceleration in fresh fruit prices and rebound in fresh vegetable prices year on year

Year on year, fresh fruit prices accelerated again in July 2021 (+25.0% after +15.0% and +14.5%). Plum prices were particularly dynamic (+56.0%). Peach prices (+41.5% after +21.8%) and nectarine prices (+36.0% after +23.2%) sped up clearly, while strawberry prices (+13.7% after –23.5%) and apricot prices (+6.1% after +12.2%) increased more moderately. Fresh vegetable prices recovered year on year (+12.1% after –2.5%) due to the acceleration of tomato prices (+43.8% after +8.1%), cucumber prices (+14.2% after +1.6%) and salad prices (+11.2% after +2.3%), as well as the rebound in courgette prices (+20.5% after –26.8%). Conversely, melon prices fell year on year (–9.5% in July).

Fall in animal prices over one month

In July 2021, animal prices fell over one month (–1.6% after +0.6%) due to the sharp fall in pig prices (–8.5% after –0.7%), which is a consequence of the large reduction in demand, particularly from China. Large cattle prices continued to rise (+0.5% after +0.9%).

Year on year, animal prices decelerated in July 2021 (+5.7% after +7.3%), in particular in connection with the slowdown in pig prices (+5.4% after +14.1%) and despite the acceleration of large cattle prices (+4.3% after +3.9%).

Fall in egg prices and acceleration of milk prices year on year

In July 2021, egg prices fell over one month (–8.5% after +3.5%) and year on year (–0.5% after +1.7%). The price of cow milk slowed down over one month (+0.3% after +1.5%) and accelerated year on year (+6.9% after +6.0%).

Further rise in input purchase prices over one month

In July 2021, the purchase prices of intermediate consumption rose over one month (+1.1% after +0.8%) due to the rises in fertilizers and soil improver prices (+5.5% after +2.9%), energy prices (+1.7% after +2.1%) and animal food prices (+0.5% after +0.6%), while plant protection product prices were almost stable (–0.1% after –0.4%). Year on year, prices of intermediate consumption sped up again in July (+9.6% after +8.4% and +7.9%).

Prices of investment goods and services rose over one month (+0.4% as in June) and accelerated year on year (+5.2% after +4.6%).

Revision

For June 2021, the year-on-year percentage change of Agricultural price indice has been revised upwards by 0.2 percentage points at +8.0%, compared to the previous release. The year-on-year percentage change of the input purchase prices indice in June 2021 is left unchanged at +7.5%.

More about French agricultural price indices

The index of producer prices for agricultural products (IPPAP) measures the change in product prices when the products are put on the market for the first time. It is published in base and reference 100 in 2015. The weight-coefficients of fresh fruit and vegetables change every month so that they reflect their seasonal pattern. As a result their variations can be interpreted only year on year. If needed, indices are seasonally adjusted.

The index of the purchase prices of inputs for agricultural production (IPPIAP) reflects the price evolution of goods and services used in the agricultural process. It is not seasonaly adjusted.
