Output in services increased sharply in June 2021 (+7.3%) Index of services production - June 2021
In June 2021, as a result of the relaxation of health restrictions, output in services went up sharply (+7.3% after +0.2% in May). This brought it closer to its February 2020 level (the last month before the start of the first lockdown), at −1.1%.
In the following paragraphs, percentage changes by subsections are presented in descending order of their contribution to the overall percentage change of the services production index. The contribution of a subsection takes into account its weight and the magnitude of its evolution.
All data are corrected for seasonal and working day effects (SA-WDA).
In June 2021, as a result of the relaxation of health restrictions, output in services went up sharply (+7.3% after +0.2% in May). This brought it closer to its February 2020 level (the last month before the start of the first lockdown), at −1.1%.
In June 2021, output went up in all sectors
In June 2021, output increased again very strongly in accommodation and food service activities (+50.2% after +47.1%). This increase was explained in food and beverage service activities (+54.2% after +44.5%) by the reopening of the terraces from 19 May, then the resumption of the indoor service and the postponement of the curfew to 11 p.m from 9 June, and finally its total lifting to 20 June. In accommodation (+32.5% after +59.6%) it can also be explained by the lifting of the curfew and a catch-up effect after several months of health restrictions. Output sped up in arts, entertainment and recreation (+43.2% after +9.9%), where some activities had to remain closed for more than six months. It recovered in transportation and storage (+6.4% after −1.5%), in professional, scientific and technical activities (+3.5% after −3.9%), in information-communication (+5.2% after −5.3%) and more moderately in administrative and support services activities (+0.7% after −0.2%). Growth continued in real estate activities (+1.5% after +5.5%).
Output in services was close to its February 2020 level, but still below it (−1.1%). The decline over February remained particularly strong in arts, entertainment and recreation (−32.9%). Output was also down relative to its February 2020 level in accommodation and food service activities (−12.3%), particularly in accommodation (−35.7%) and more moderately in catering (−5.6%). It was also down in administrative and support services activities (−5.2%), transportation and storage (−2.1% and −42.1% specifically in air transport), and real estate activities (−0.6%). On the other hand, the information-communication (+11.2%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (+4.1%) sectors were above their level in February 2020.
